Weights are percentages of the courseHow weighted grades work
Most courses don't treat all points equally. A syllabus might make homework worth 20% of your grade, quizzes 25%, the midterm 25%, and the final exam 30%. In that system, a 95% homework average helps you far less than a 95% on exams — the weight is the multiplier that decides how much each category moves your final number.
The formula
Weighted grade = Σ (grade × weight) ÷ Σ weights. Multiply each category grade by its weight, add everything up, and divide by the total weight. If homework is 92% at 20% weight and exams are 80% at 60% weight, your standing is (92 × 20 + 80 × 60) ÷ 80 = 83%. Notice we divided by 80, not 100 — when part of the course (like the final) hasn't been graded yet, the calculator normalizes across what's actually been earned.
Mid-semester vs. end-of-semester
Mid-semester, your weights usually total less than 100% because the final exam and remaining projects are ungraded. The result then is your current standing — an honest "if the semester ended today" number. Once every category is graded and weights total 100%, the weighted grade is your official course grade. To find out what you specifically need on the final exam, use the final grade calculator.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Averaging categories equally. An 80% quiz average and a 90% homework average is not 85% if quizzes weigh twice as much.
- Using points instead of percentages. Convert each category to a percentage first, then apply weights.
- Forgetting dropped grades. If your instructor drops the lowest quiz, remove it before computing your quiz average.
Frequently asked questions
Multiply each category's grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight entered. Example: homework 92% at 20% weight and exams 80% at 60% weight gives (92×20 + 80×60) ÷ 80 = 83% current standing.
That's normal mid-semester — the final exam weight is still unearned. The calculator normalizes across the weights you entered, showing your standing on the graded portion so far.
Only once all categories are graded and weights total 100%. Before that, a weighted grade reflects your current standing. To see what you need on the final exam specifically, use the final grade calculator.
