What Grade Do I Need on My Final? The Formula + Calculator
Every student has asked this question the week before finals. Here's the exact math, three worked examples, and a free calculator that gives you the answer in one second.
The final exam grade formula
Here's the exact math:
Required Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight
Where:
- Current Grade = your grade right now, before the final
- Target Grade = the grade you want in the class
- Final Weight = how much the final counts (as a decimal: 30% = 0.30)
Example 1: You need a B-
You're at 78%, want 85%, final worth 30%:
Required = (85 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (85 − 54.6) ÷ 0.30 = 30.4 ÷ 0.30 = 101.3%
Result: not achievable. You'd need over 100% on the final. Time to either lower your target or focus on classes where the math works.
Example 2: Close but doable
You're at 72%, want 80%, final worth 40%:
Required = (80 − 72 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (80 − 43.2) ÷ 0.40 = 36.8 ÷ 0.40 = 92%
Result: 92% on the final. Ambitious but realistic with 3+ days of focused study.
Example 3: Easy lift
You're at 88%, want 90%, final worth 25%:
Required = (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 24 ÷ 0.25 = 96%
Result: 96%. You don't need perfection — just a very strong final. Focus your energy elsewhere.
Use this number strategically
Once you know your required score for each class, rank your finals by ease of achievement:
- Highest ROI first. A class where you need 85% is a better investment than one where you need 98%.
- Stop grinding on impossible targets. If you need 103%, redirect that study time to a class where 2 hours makes a real difference.
- Check your syllabus. Curves, dropped quizzes, and extra credit can shift the math in your favor.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why it hurts |
|---|---|
| Guessing the required grade | Wastes time studying for a 98% when 82% would do |
| Ignoring the final weight | A 30% final changes everything; 10% barely moves the needle |
| Studying equally for all finals | Time is finite — spend it where the grade bump is biggest |
| Panic-cramming without a plan | 3 focused days beats 1 all-nighter |
